With that being said I am starting my resolution early and welcoming myself back into the blogging world. 2013 is going to be full of craziness - okay well not really anything to crazy planned besides the wedding, but I do want to take time to do some things better so what better time than the present to get a jump start on things!
As many of you know my wedding is pretty much planned, just a few "mickey mouse" things to do. So without further ado here are my 13 resolutions for 2013.
- Get into better shape and maintain. Hopefully this won't be too difficult now even in inclement weather with the Wii Fit!
- Organize, Organize and oh yah Organize! I am a very organized person but it wouldn't hurt to get the house and our files into a little better filing system. I am also hoping to use our storage spaces and add some additional ones around the house to meet our various needs.
- Build up the savings. I won't lie it has been a struggle financially this year. I wasn't prepared to be bombarded with school loans upon graduation and the other unforeseen household expenses that popped up throughout the year. I relied a little too heavily on the credit card and drained my savings so now it's time to build it back up and get ready for the wedding expenses.
- Spend more time with family. Alan and I are pretty good about keeping in touch with family, but we don't always visit them as much as I would like. I'm hoping that we can make it a point to visit or have family over at least once a month.
- Volunteer more. I do my part and donate to organizations when I can, but I would definitely like to take time out to volunteer more. I hope to do more for the American Heart Association as well as the local animal shelter. I'm considering fostering animals Alan isn't so sure he could part with them once we took them in. I think we definitely could and it would be great to socialize Geno and Emma.
- Be published. For years I've been working on various research and leisure writing projects. I hope that I can use the research I've done to publish an article in a magazine or finally work on the children's book that has been put on the back burner for a few years.
- Coupon more effectively. I love a good savings but I do not always employ the savings to my advantage. I need to get back into the habit of budgeting my spending and figuring out what I spend at each store and how I can lessen the costs of particularly grocery shopping.
- Pay it forward. We have been fortunate the past year. Although we ran into a few tough times financially we were fortunate enough to both have jobs, a roof over our heads we have run into a few circumstances where others have been grateful and helped us out or cut us a break so it's only fair to pay it forward. I would also like to commit to do more random acts of kindness. I have always been one to try and do things without the acknowledgement of doing them but could definitely improve. Pinterest always has some great ideas.
- Travel more. I love to travel - Alan not so much. I hope we can find time to pack up the pets and send them to the grandparents for the weekend and take off on more road trips to do and see some things we've talked about doing. We aren't taking a honeymoon - we have the week off but no real set itinerary. We are planning on spending a few days in Ohio and perhaps heading north to Canada so a few weekend trips should definitely be doable.
- Learn a new word a week. I was able to pick up vocabulary to add to my repertoire during grad school. I was keeping track of new words I was coming across to use. Now I hope to build my vocabulary and learn one new word a week.
- Actively pursue my doctorate. Yes I am crazy. As my dad would say I aspire to be a "permanent student". I never knew what a masters degree was let alone actually get one. Now that I have one I'm degree hungry and would love to get my doctorate in psychology or education.
- Career move. I love teaching and I wouldn't trade it for the world, but it kills me when I am not even making half of what others are that only have half the schooling I do. I know education is not a well paid field but with my experience as well as psychology background I need to look into trying a new route. Perhaps teaching at the secondary or higher education level. Maybe looking into get special education certified as well.
- Have fun. So many times I am so stressed and worried about anything and everything. The wedding will be done by April and I'll have the rest of the year to celebrate. I don't often go out anymore because crowds annoy me so I hope to get out more than I have and have a little more fun now that I'm done with school.
